unseen structures
The foundation of my work is essentially an anxiety. What I'm specifically afraid of is less relevant to others, I think. We all fear something, especially things beyond our control that carry an element of chaos.
Crystals are formed from molecules with inherent order, creating shapes, fractals, edges, bubbles, and patterns akin to those in living or biological entities like fungi, insects, and corals.
The crystals I work with are made from dihydrogen ammonium phosphate, a key element in synthetic fertilizers. Considered one of the 20th century’s most important inventions, synthetic fertilizer feeds 4 billion people. It's produced by extracting nitrogen from the air, which constitutes 78% of what we breathe, adding hydrogen to release ammonia, crucial for fertilizers.
Ammonia, also a key ingredient in these crystals.
Synthetic fertilizer runoff leads to water oxygen depletion and releases nitrous oxide, breaking down the ozone layer. This narrative is familiar to all of us.
Unseen Structures is the result of a month spent in a hotel room in Herning and is displayed on pedestals in a hallway. The work revolves around a meditation on porous bodies and buildings within the invisible chemical landscape we inhabit. It features crystal formations, a perpetually trembling peristaltic pump with shoes, and a cancerous stomach.
